Caption: Y dwarf star, artwork. This cold star-like object, similar to a large gas giant, is on the border between being a planet and a star. Y dwarfs are the coldest star-like bodies known. NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) detected these objects for the first time. It found six Y dwarfs, ranging in atmospheric temperatures from 175 to 25 degrees Celsius. Y dwarfs, a type of brown dwarf, fade and cool with time, giving off heat in infrared wavelengths. The 'Y' designation is a letter in the stellar classification scheme, which ranges from 'O' (hottest) to 'Y' (coolest). The Sun is G-class. Artwork published in 2011.
