Caption: Milky Way galaxy, 2MASS infrared image. This projection shows the entire sky as recorded by the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS, 1997-2001). It is centred on the Milky Way's disc (horizontal), seen from our position inside this spiral galaxy. The 2MASS survey recorded the brightnesses of half a billion stars. The colours represent three wavelengths of infrared light: blue at 1.2 microns, green at 1.6 microns, and red at 2.2 microns. The red-brown areas are the Milky Way's nebulae and dust lanes. The faint patches at lower right are the Milky Way's satellite galaxies, the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds.
