Caption: Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica). This species was introduced to the UK in the mid- nineteenth century as an ornamental plant. It has since become a serious problem in water courses and wastelands where it crowds out other plants. Photographed in Balmaha, Loch Lomond, Scotland, in September.
