This protein plays a crucial role in mediating calcium-induced processes in cells. It binds to calcium ions, and then in turn binds to other proteins. The process activated depends on the protein to which it binds. Calmodulin contains 148 amino acids, which contain carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen atoms (colour-coded here).
