Caption: Cubic crystal. Computer model of a single cubic crystal molecule. This structure is duplicated in crystals such as sodium chloride (common salt). Eight spherical atoms form the corners of the cube joined by right angled atomic bonds. A cubic crystal consists of a lattice of large numbers of these cubes. In sodium chloride, sodium (Na+) and chlorine (Cl-) charged atoms form an ionic lattice where the repeating cubic units are positively and negatively charged respectively. Such ionic crystals tend to be hard and brittle, due to the strong electrostatic forces between the constitutent ions.
