Serge Haroche (born 1944), French physicist. Haroche is best known for his work in quantum decoherence; how quantum systems appear to collapse into classical systems on observation. He was awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physics for experimental work that trapped photons (light particles), allowing their quantum states to be measured. The prize was jointly awarded with the US physicist David Wineland.
