Caption: Dead Sea. False-colour satellite image of the Dead Sea. North is at top. Deep waters are blue or dark blue, while brighter blues indicate shallow waters or salt ponds (in the south). The pale pink and sand-colored regions are barren desert landscapes, while green indicates sparsely vegetated lands. Denser vegetation appears bright red. The Dead Sea is located in the Jordan Rift Valley and borders Jordan, Israel, and the West Bank. It is one of the world's saltiest bodies of water. In recent decades, the sea has been shrinking due to diversion of water from the Jordan River, the sea's main tributary. Near the centre is the Lisan Peninsula, which forms a land bridge through the Dead Sea. Imaged by the Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus on the Landsat 7.
