Caption: Milky Way-Andromeda galactic collision. Artwork showing the future collision between the Milky Way Galaxy (disrupted) and the Andromeda Galaxy (spiral, lower left). This collision, which takes place slowly over millions of years, is seen above a landscape of mountains and water. This is the aftermath of the collision, which will start 4 billion years from now. Due to the encounter, chaotic bands of expanding star forming nebulae (upper right) have formed in the Milky Way. Andromeda recedes, but over millions of years, it will continue to interact and merge with our Galaxy. For the start of this collision, see C014/4725.
