Caption: Cloud types, diagram. The scale at left gives the elevation above sea level up to 25,000 feet (7620 metres). The large cloud at right is a cumulonimbus, a large storm cloud that has developed vertically to form an anvil-shaped thunderhead at the tropopause, the boundary between the troposphere and stratosphere. At left is a cumulus cloud. Both are producing rain over mountains, with lightning at right. Between them are stratus clouds, with stratocumulus above them. At centre left are altocumulus clouds, with wispy strands of altostratus above them. Across top are the very highest clouds: cirrocumulus, cirrus and cirrostratus.
