The crystal structure consists of both the secondary structure, represented by an alpha helix (ribbon), and primary structure, represented by colour-coded spheres (carbon: grey, oxygen: red, nitrogen: blue). Ghrelin is responsible for stimulating the feeling of hunger. Ghrelin levels increase before meals and decrease after meals. Here, it is shown with an octanoylation (foreground left) on the third amino acid (serine). This octanoylated peptide can activate the GHSR receptor and is therefore known as the active form of ghrelin.
