Caption: Congenital syphilis. Coloured X-ray of the lower legs of a child with congenital syphilis. Syphilis, which is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum, is passed from infected mothers to the foetus during pregnancy. Both tibias (shinbones) are bowed forwards, a deformity known as sabre shin that is characteristic of latent congenital syphilis. There is also a lesion (orange) in the left tibia (right).
