Caption: Curiosity rover in Gale Crater, Mars. The ellipse (blue) shows the target landing area, and the green dot shows where NASA's Curiosity rover landed on 6 August 2012. The crater is 154 kilometres across. This oblique view (looking south-east) shows Mount Sharp (Aeolis Mons) at centre. This peak rises some 5.5 kilometres above the crater floor. This image is derived from a combination of elevation and imaging data from three Mars orbiters: HiRISE and the Context Camera, both on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter; the High Resolution Stereo Camera on the Mars Express orbiter; and data from the Viking Orbiter.
