Milky Way over Cerro Armazones. Night-time panorama of the stars and nebulae of the Milky Way in the sky over Cerro Armazones in the Chilean desert. This location, near the European Southern Observatory's Paranal Observatory, is the site of the Very Large Telescope (VLT), and has also been chosen as the site for the planned European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). The E-ELT will be used to study extrasolar planets, super-massive black holes and dark matter. Construction began in 2012. It is scheduled to be completed and operational by 2022.
