Caption: Bone death. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the hip of a patient with osteonecrosis (bone death, white at upper centre) in the femur (thigh bone). The bone death results from a loss of blood flow to the area, known as an infarction. Osteonecrosis causes causes pain and swelling. Treatment is with pain relief and exercise. In severe cases, surgery may be needed to remove the dead tissue or replace the joint.
