Caption: US Naval Observatory, Washington DC, USA. The USNO was established in 1830 to provide astronomical timings and data for US shipping. These buildings were erected in 1893 on Observatory Hill to a design by Richard Morris Hunt. They replaced the Old Naval Observatory (in Foggy Bottom, near the river). The main features here are a transit house (Building 8, left) and the Main Building (centre and right). The latter includes Building 1 and the James Melville Gilliss library (conical roof, far right). Building 1 houses administration offices and a tower (centre left) with a dome for the 12-inch Clark/Saegmueller refracting telescope.
