Caption: Licancabur volcano at night. Night view across a group of ice penitentes on a high-altitude plateau in the Andes mountains, Chile, looking towards Licancabur volcano. Penitentes, or nieves penitentes, are a snow formation found at high altitudes. They take the form of tall thin blades of hardened snow, or ice, closely spaced with the blades oriented towards the general direction of the sun. Licancabur is a highly symmetrical stratovolcano on the southernmost part of the border between Chile and Bolivia.
