Caption: Sunspots. Telescope image of sunspots on the surface of the Sun. Sunspots are areas of magnetic activity that contain cooler gas than the rest of the Sun's surface. They are massive structures, ranging in size from hundreds of kilometres across to larger than the Earth. Each of the two larger sunspot groups in this image covers an area over 10 times larger than the Earth.
