Caption: Steel tie-rod-and-plate assemblies installed on masonry of the dilapidated 18th century Baroque Palazzo Bongiovanni in Syracuse, Sicily, to reinforce and increase the stability of the walls and prevent lateral bowing or bulging. The extent and degree of destruction caused by the 1693 earthquake resulted in extensive rebuilding of the towns and cities of south-eastern Sicily in the late Baroque style. This area is in permanent danger from earthquakes and eruptions from the Etna volcano.
