Caption: The French inventor and pioneer of steam power the Marquis Jouffroy d'Abbans supervising the construction of the boiler for the first practical steamboat. Made by the local coppersmith out of beaten copper, it was reinforced by iron bands. Claude-Francois-Dorothée Jouffroy (1751-1832) successfully sailed the 'Palmipede” on the River Doubs in 1776.
