Caption: Leo Antonovich Bokeria (b.1939), Russian cardiac surgeon. Bokeria graduated in 1965 and has enjoyed a glittering career in cardiothoracic surgery. He pioneered the use of many techniques including hyperbaric therapy, cryotherapy and laser coagulation in arrythmia and the implanting of a combined cardioverter and defibrillator. In 1994 he was elected Director of the Bakuleva Institute of Cardiac Surgery in Moscow. In 2006 he was asked to investigate the cause of death of alleged war criminal Slobodan Milosevic who had a heart attack whilst in custody awaiting trial at The Hague. Photographed in 2010.
