Caption: John Bernal speaking in Moscow. Bernal (1901-1971) was a gifted physicist, chemist and biologist. He pioneered many techniques in X-ray crystallography and the determination of molecular structures. He was also very active politically, with a long-standing affinity for socialism and communism and an affection for the Soviet way of life. He was most active in the peace movement. Photographed at an international symposium on higher education held in Moscow in 1962.
