Caption: Bering Bridge expedition. Distant view of dog sleds of the Bering Bridge expedition crossing an ice field. The 1989 exhibition was made by Russian Dmitri Shparo and American Paul Shurke who crossed the ice bridge over the Bering Strait between Siberia and Alaska. The purpose was to break the closed border between the USA and USSR, allowing Inuit groups trapped on one side or the other to regain contact. At the end of April 1989 the border was indeed reopened.
