Caption: Iron ore. Samples of low-grade iron ore, with a sample of a dressed ore at centre. Dressing, or beneficiation, is the process by which the iron ore contained in low-grade deposits is separated from its surrounding matrix of material, known as gangue. The resulting concentrated ore, or fines, can then be used indirect smelting processes to make steel. Photographed in the Irkutsk region of Russia.
