Caption: Spacewalk. Astronaut Joseph R. Tanner performs a spacewalk during a Space Shuttle Mission. A spacewalk is also known as ExtraVehicular Activity (EVA). A reference checklist of activities is attached to Tanner's arm. An EVA spacesuit provides an astronaut with air, heating and a means of propulsion, allowing a person to float free of the shuttle. Photographed during space shuttle mission STS-82 (11-21 February 1997), during which astronauts from the shuttle Discovery performed five EVAs to service the Hubble Space Telescope.
