Caption: A view inside one of the copper tubes forming the Linac III particle accelerator at DESY, the German particle physics laboratory in Hamburg. "Linac" is short for linear accelerator. The 32-metre long machine, constructed during 1987-1989, produces & accelerates hydrogen ions which will eventually supply the protons for use in HERA, the giant new DESY accelerator which will collide protons with electrons. Linac III consists of a source which provides ions with an energy of 18 keV; they are then accelerated down the linac to 50 MeV before being injected into the DESY III proton synchrotron, the second stage in their journey to HERA.
