Caption: Pediastrum green algae. Differential interference contrast light micrograph of a circular colony of Pediastrum sp. green algae (Chlorophyte). Pediastrum is a type of freshwater colonial algae. The colony comprises a central cell surrounded by concentric rings of cells, the outermost of which each have two lobes projecting outwards, giving the colony a spiky appearance. Each individual cell can form a complete new colony inside, enabling the organism to multiply rapidly. Magnification: x549 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
