Caption: Australopithecines Lucien and Lucy. Reconstruction of the Lucien and Lucy specimens of Australopithecus afarensis. Lucy was found in the Afar region of Ethiopia between 1973 and 1977. She dates from 3.3 million years ago, and is one of the earliest links in the human fossil record. Lucien (the larger male in the background) is based on the fossil skull AL-444, found in Ethiopia in 1991. Both models are shown walking on fossil footprints that were discovered in 1976 in Laetoli, Tanzania. Reconstruction by Elisabeth Daynes of the Daynes Studio, Paris, France.
