Caption: Australopithecines Lucy and Lucien. Reconstruction of the Lucy (left) and Lucien (right) specimens of Australopithecus afarensis. Lucy was found in the Afar region of Ethiopia between 1973 and 1977. She dates from 3.3 million years ago, and is one of the earliest links in the human fossil record. Lucien (the larger male in the background) is based on the fossil skull AL-444, found in Ethiopia in 1991. Reconstruction by Elisabeth Daynes of the Daynes Studio, Paris, France.
