Australopithecus afarensis research. Anthropologist Yoel Rak with a model of the head of a male specimen of Australopithecus afarensis. This hominin species lived between 3.9 and 2.9 million years ago, and is one of the earliest links in the human fossil record. This reconstruction is based on a fossil skull excavated in Israel.
