Caption: European bison. A European bison (Bison bonasus), also known as a wisant, photographed in a reserve in Belarus. Once a widespread species, the wisant was hunted to extinction in the wild by 1919. Stock have been reintroduced from the descendants of some 50 animals in zoos. The species was recently downgraded from 'endangered' to 'vulnerable', reflecting growing numbers in the wild.
