Caption: Potash mine. A tunnel boring machine in a potash mine. The machine combined cutting teeth that break the face of the deposit with a set of helical blades that pull the rock toward the drift conveyor and off out of the mine. Potash consists of potassium salts, mainly chloride, that are sequentially deposited in inland marine environments along with common salt. This gives rise to the characteristic banded appearance of the rocks. Photographed in Belarus.
