Caption: Arctic rocks and lichen (orange and grey). Lichens are formed from a symbiotic association between a fungus and an alga. The alga is contained within the fungus. It is therefore protected from harsh conditions. The alga supplies the fungus with nutrients that it makes by photosynthesis. Photographed in February in Wapusk National Park, Manitoba, Canada.
