Caption: Brain activity in Parkinson's disease. Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) DaTSCAN images comparing the number of functional neurons (nerve cells, coloured areas) in the presynaptic dopaminergic pathway of a normal (control) subject's brain (top 3), with that of a patient with advanced Parkinson's disease (bottom 3). These scans show the number of functional neurons in this pathway is much reduced in the affected patient compared to that of the control subject. Specifically they show net hypofixation of the left and right putamen.
