Caption: Circumflex ichthyosis. Dry flaky patches of skin on the back and arms of a male patient with circumflex ichthyosis. This skin condition is characterised by the occurrence of symmetrical or patchy areas of hypertrophy (excessive growth) of the horny (keratinized) layer of the epidermis. Ichthyosis is a heterogeneous family of at least 28 mostly genetic skin disorders. All types of ichthyosis have dry, thickened, scaly or flaky skin. Treatment often takes the form of topical application of creams and emollient oils, in an attempt to hydrate the skin.
