Caption: Brain haemorrhage. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scans of sections through the brain of a 64-year-old man, showing a large haematoma (collection of blood, green) of the superficial middle cerebral vein (superficial Sylvian vein) of the left hemisphere (right). Here, the bleed has also invaded the ventricular horns. Bleeding (haemorrhage) in the brain occurs when a blood vessel, such as an artery, ruptures. It may occur spontaneously or be caused by a head injury, high blood pressure or vascular disease. The area of the brain supplied by the ruptured artery may die due to lack of oxygenated blood, leading to a stroke.
