Caption: Quadruple heart bypass. 2D (top) and 3D (bottom) computed tomography (CT) scans of the heart of a 60-year-old man who has undergone quadruple coronary (heart) bypass surgery. Coronary artery bypass surgery is a surgical procedure performed to relieve angina and reduce the risk of death from coronary artery disease. Arteries or veins from elsewhere in the patient's body are grafted to the coronary arteries to bypass narrowings and improve the blood supply to the myocardium (heart muscle). The terms single bypass, double bypass etc. refer to the number of coronary arteries bypassed in the procedure - in this case four.
