Caption: Diffraction experiment. Simulation showing the variation with wavelength of the diffraction pattern that results when a plane wave (top in each image) passes through a slit in a barrier. The resulting pattern is shown as: (1) an amplitude value distribution (red and yellow), with the amplitude value increasing from transparent via red and yellow towards white; (2) an intensity distribution (which increases from blue towards pink) at a certain distance parallel to the aperture. Here, the wavelength decreases in the order: upper left, upper right, lower left, lower right. For the variation with slit size, see C014/7190.
