Caption: Thrombin blood-clotting factor in a vial. Thrombin (coagulation factor II) is a human protein that triggers blood clotting. The liquid in this vial will be used to prepare a dose of activated thrombin in a syringe to apply to a cut tissue surface during surgery to stem bleeding. This is known as haemostasis. Here, it is being used during liver surgery.
