Caption: Beijing 2010. Satellite image showing the extent of the city of Beijing, China, in 2010. Beijing is one of the oldest cities in the world. Over the last 30 years its explosive growth has made it the most densely populated in the world. In 1972, Beijing's population was about 7.9 million. By 2010 this had swelled to more than 12 million, fuelled by the success of economic reforms beginning in the 1970s. Imaged by the Thematic Mapper instrument onboard NASA's Landsat 5 satellite, on 8th August 2010.
