Caption: Foetal spine development. Light micrograph of a section through the spine of a foetus. At centre is an intervertebral disc (blue), with two vertebrae (spinal bones, pink) at top and bottom. The light blue oval is the nucleus pulposus (oval), the gel-like centre of the intervertebral disc. It is surroruned by the annulus fibrosus, which is made up of concentric sheets of collagen. The blue lines within the vertebrae are the epiphyseal plates, where bone growth occurs.
