Caption: Fern sorus. Laser scanning confocal micrograph of fern (Polypodium virginianum) sorus. The sorus is a cluster of sporangia which are the structures where fern spores are produced. Confocal microscopes create optical slices of specimens. Laser light from the microscope causes the stained specimen to fluoresce and reveal variations in structures. The bulbous hair-like structures (red) are glandular cells known as paraphyses. Beneath the sorus is the fern leaf surface (green) where stomata cells are visible (dark green).
