Caption: Coconut crab (Birgus latro) carrying a dead chick across tree roots. The coconut crab is a terrestrial hermit crab, and is the largest terrestrial arthropod. It may reach a leg span of more than 90 centimetres, and a weight of more than four kilograms. It feeds on fruits, nuts and dead animals, and also catches prey such as rats and turtle hatchlings. Filmed on Palmyra Atoll, an uninhabited territory of the USA in the central Pacific Ocean.
