Caption: Computer graphics representation of the structure of zeolite-Y (Faujasite), a mineral of fundamental importance in the refining of petroleum. Zeolite-Y forms the basis of the Fluidized Catalytic Cracking process (FCC), where large molecules from oil are fragmented into smaller stable hydrocarbons such as gasoline, kerosene & gas oils. Here, the structure of the zeolite is shown as tetrahedral units, each composed of a central atom of silicon or aluminium surrounded by four oxygen atoms.
