Caption: A close-up of the beam pipe of a particle accelerator. Subatomic particles such as electrons or protons are accelerated through the beam pipe before being smashed into fixed targets, or into other particles, in physics experiments. At left & right can be seen two of the magnets which bend & focus the beam of particles. This is the beam pipe of the DORIS II particle collider at DESY, the German particle physics laboratory in Hamburg. DORIS II is oval in shape, & 288 metres in circumference. It accelerates beams of electrons & positrons in opposite directions within the same beam pipe & collides them at selected points at a maximum energy of 5.6 GeV per beam.
