Caption: Intercosmos-8. The Intercosmos-8 spacecraft during assembly. Intercosmos-8 was designed to study high-energy particles such as protons in the vicinity of the Earth's upper atmosphere in an attempt to better understand space physics. It was launched on an 11K63 rocket (a modified SS-4 Sandal missile) on 30 November 1972 from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome. It was destroyed on re-entry on 2 March 1973.
