Caption: Ant research, conceptual artwork. The stilts attached to this ant's legs, and the map it is consulting, represent research that was done to determine how ants navigate. Ants build up a mental image of their route, enabling them to repeat the same journey many times. However, when stilt-like extensions were added to their legs, the ants over-estimated the distance travelled, and lost their way. This indicated that ant navigation is due to programmed responses, rather than higher cognitive abilities. At upper left and right are children using magnifying glasses in an attempt to incinerate ants.
