Caption: Free-floating planet and galaxy. Artwork of a free-floating planet (lower right) moving through space against a background of a large spiral galaxy. This planet is not orbiting a star, but has formed independently or been ejected from its parent system. Galaxies are large gravitationally bound groups of stars and other astronomical bodies. They can contain many billions of stars. In a spiral galaxy, older yellow stars are found in the central region, with younger, blue stars forming in the spiral arms, which include nebulae and dust lanes (black).
