Caption: Strike a light. Close-up of a match just lit up. The match seen here is of an older type. The head contains a mixture of potassium chlorate and red phosphorus, and is ignited by striking it along a strip of glass powder embedded in a glue matrix. Friction creates enough heat to trigger the reaction, so this type of match may be struck on almost any hard surface. More modern matches rely on a friction reaction between two chemicals, one in the head and one on the matchbox. As they can only be struck on the box, these are referred to as 'safety matches'.
