Caption: John Werner Cahn (born 1928), US materials scientist. Cahn's doctorate in physical chemistry (1953) was from the University of California, Berkeley. He then worked at the General Electric laboratory in Schenectady, New York state. Between 1964 and 1978 he was a professor in the department of Materials Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Cahn has worked on spinodal decomposition, solidification, quasicrystals, and other aspects of surface chemistry and physics. His awards include the National Medal of Science (1998), the Bower Prize (2002) and the Michelson-Morley Award (1991).
