Caption: Ugo Fano (1912-2001), Italian-US theoretical physicist. Fano obtained his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Turin, Italy. He then worked in Europe, including time with Fermi and Heisenberg. The rise of fascism and anti-semitism led to his emigration to the USA in 1939. He worked at the National Bureau of Standards until 1956 and then joined the University of Chicago. His most famous work was in quantum mechanics on what is called the Fano resonance (1961). He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences (1976) and a Foreign Member of the Royal Society (1995).
